How to Get Semi Gloss Paint Out of Brown Clothing

No doubt about it -- painting can be a messy job. You protect the floors and furniture with plastic covering, and no matter how careful you are when you’re painting, you may find a spot or two of paint on your clothing. Before you take the steps to remove the paint, consider the type of paint – oil-based or water-based -- and check to make sure the fabric is washable. For best results, work on getting semi gloss paint out of brown clothing while it’s still wet.

Instructions

  1. Water-Based Semi Gloss Stains

    • 1

Cover a work surface with newspapers. Place two to three white paper towels on a flat surface.

    • 2

Scrap as much of the paint from the fabric as you can with a plastic putty knife. Wipe the paint from the knife before each pass over the paint.

    • 3

Mix 1 cup of lukewarm water and 1 cup of liquid dishwashing soap in a bucket. Soak a clean white cloth in the solution.

    • 4

Place the brown clothing with stain side down on the paper towels. Fold the clothing back so that you can clean the paint from the backside of the stain.

    • 5

Press the wet, soapy cloth onto the back of the stain. Repeatedly blot the stain forcefully with the cloth until you no longer see the stain on the clothing. Do not rub the stain.

    • 6

Launder the clothing per the garment care instructions on the clothing in the washing machine.

    Oil-Based Semi Gloss Stains

    • 7

Prepare a work area by setting newspapers on a flat surface. Set two or three white paper towels on the newspapers.

    • 8

Scrape away the top layer of the semi gloss paint from the clothing with a plastic putty knife. Clean the plastic tool after each brush over the paint to keep from spreading the stain back into the clothing.

    • 9

Place the fabric with the stain down on the paper towels. Turn the fabric so you can reach back of the stain on the material.

    • 10

Put on rubber gloves to protect your skin. Pour a small amount of mineral spirits onto a cotton ball. Check for color fastness by pressing the cotton ball on an inconspicuous area of the brown clothing. If the color does not change, continue to the next step, otherwise, you will not be able to remove the stain without further damaging the brown clothing.

    • 11

Press the soaked cotton ball to the back of the stain. The paint will bleed onto the paper towels. Continue pressing the mineral spirits to the back of the stain until it is gone. Wash the clothes according to the care instruction on the clothing label.
