How to Get Dye Stains Out of a Cream Canvas Tote Bag

Dye stains include dark-colored juice, grass, India ink and paint, among others. They are very difficult to remove from most fabrics and require time and effort to do so. Made from cotton, canvas quickly absorbs stains that set deep within the fabric when left alone for a period of time without treatment. Canvas is a durable material and, when treated correctly, holds up well during the stain-removal process. You can remove dye stains from canvas tote bags with cleaners that are readily available in many households.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply heavy-duty liquid dish soap to the dye stain on both sides of the canvas fabric.

    • 2

Brush the dye-stained canvas gently on both sides with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

    • 3

Rinse the stained fabric under a forceful stream of lukewarm water. Lukewarm water is heated to a temperature of 85 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 4

Launder the canvas tote bag in the heavy-duty liquid dish soap by itself during a full washer cycle.

    • 5

Remove the canvas tote bag from the washer and soak the stain in a solution of lukewarm water and all-fabric powdered bleach, according to the directions on the package.

    • 6

Treat stubborn stains by soaking the canvas in a solution of water and liquid chlorine bleach, following the directions on the label. Test the solution on hidden part of the tote bag to make certain the canvas is colorfast.

    • 7

Dry the bag on the clothesline in full sunlight or in the dryer.
