What Cleans Rust off Tile?

Abrasive Cleansers

• Abrasive cleansers such as scouring powder can often remove rust stains from tile. The U.S. General Services Administration, or GSA, suggests using an abrasive cleaner that contains trisodium phosphate, or TSP, for best results. Apply the cleanser to the rusty spot with a damp, soft cloth. Vigorously rub your tile until the rust stain comes up. Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water and wipe the tile dry with a clean cloth. Using abrasive or acidic cleansers can damage more delicate tile finishes such as marble.

Commercial Pumice Bar

• The GSA recommends using a commercial pumice bar to remove rust stains from ceramic tile. Pumice bars are made from volcanic rock and have a mildly abrasive texture. Ceramic is stronger than pumice, however, so this stain removal method shouldn't scratch your tiles. Simply wet down the pumice bar and rub it over the rust stain. Rinse the spot with water and dry with a clean rag. Repeat these steps as needed.

White Vinegar

• Homemade acidic cleansers can help remove rust from your tile. White vinegar contains approximately 5 percent of acid and removes rust stains. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and salt to create a paste. Apply the paste to the rust stain and allow it to dry thoroughly. Remove the paste with a damp rag and wipe your tile dry.

Lemon Juice

• The high level of citric acid found in lemon juice makes it a good choice for cleaning rust off of tile surfaces. The GSA suggests treating persistent rust stains with a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and borax. Apply the paste to the rust stain and let it dry completely. Remove the paste with a soft cloth and clean, warm water. Repeat these steps, if necessary.

Commercial Products

• Commercial products that contain specially formulated rust removing chemicals might be your only option for cleaning stubborn rust stains from your tile. Many of the rust removal products contain oxalic acid or trichloro-melanine, both effective compounds on set stains. Always follow the instructions on the product's label for the best results.

Considerations

• Clean rust off of tile as soon as possible. The longer the rust penetrates the tile surface, the harder it will be for you to remove the stain. Take proper safety precautions when following any rust removal procedure. Open windows and set up a fan to promote adequate ventilation. Always wear protective gloves when working with harsh chemicals. Never mix commercial cleansers because certain combinations can produce toxic fumes.
