How to Remove a Hearth Stain

You can remove most hearth stains quickly if you attack spills and splatters as soon as they occur. Target your stain-removal efforts to the type of stain and the surface material of your hearth. Avoid wiping or rubbing any stain remover in favor of blotting, because stains can spread. Many stains respond to treatment with natural and non-toxic materials, or you may choose from various commercial stain removal solvents and cleaners. Read the product labels before you buy the product to ensure your stain removal agent will be effective on your type of stain and is safe to use on your hearth.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply undiluted rubbing alcohol to ink stains on hearths. Pour the alcohol onto a clean, dry cloth, then press the cloth to cover the stain. Wait at least 30 minutes before blotting the ink stain.

    • 2

Fill a plastic bag with ice cubes and apply to wax drippings on a hearth. Freeze the wax, then scrape away the hardened wax with the blunt end of a butter knife. Wash the residual stain with warm, soapy water. Scrub with a stiff vegetable brush to remove remaining wax. Rinse with clear water.

    • 3

Daub up spilled sodas, mixed drinks and fruit drinks with a dry, absorbent cloth. Wring a soapy washcloth onto the spill. Allow the water to penetrate the stain for 10 minutes. Sponge up excess liquid.

    • 4

Sprinkle cat litter or sawdust around the outside of an oil-based stain to stop the stain from spreading. Once you've stopped the spread, sprinkle more litter or sawdust directly onto the stain. Scrub the stain with a stiff brush. Sweep the absorbent matter away and repeat the process.

Absorb spilled salad dressings, gravies, gelatin and other liquid foods with a paper towel. Wash the area with a warm, soapy cloth. Rinse with ¼ cup chlorine bleach mixed with ½ cup water.
