How to Clean Smoke-Stained Limestone

Natural stone like limestone is a calcareous stone consisting of calcium carbonate. This natural stone is susceptible to stains from various sources, including smoke. When you clean smoke-stained limestone, avoid acidic cleansers because they will harm your limestone surface. Instead, use a pH neutral cleaner, which is neither acidic nor alkaline, to clean the soot. Additionally, you can clean the stone with chemicals formulated to clean stone surfaces.

  • Drop cloths or towels
  • Sponges
  • Warm water

Instructions

  1. Natural Liquid Soap

    • 1

Place absorbent drop cloths or towels beneath or around the limestone. This cloth will protect the area around the stone from the water and cleaning products.

    • 2

Moisten the smoke-stained limestone with warm water. Submerge a sponge in water and squeeze the water out onto the limestone if you’re cleaning a surface such as a fireplace or countertop.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of neutral pH liquid soap onto a nylon bristle scrub brush. Scrub the soot on the brick in a circular motion.

    • 4

Rinse the limestone with warm water. Dry with dry towels or cloths.

    Chemical Cleaner

    • 5

Protect the area around the limestone with drop cloths or towels. Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands and protective glasses to shield your eyes from potential splashing.

    • 6

Soak a sponge and squeeze out the water over the smoke-stained limestone to moisten the material.

    • 7

Fill a bottle halfway with water. Add an equal amount of trisodium phosphate to the water bottle. Shake the bottle gently to mix the solution.

    • 8

Spray the soot with the TSP solution. Scrub the surface with a nylon bristle scrub brush.

    • 9

Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water. Dry the limestone with towels or absorbent cloths.
