How to Get Red Wine Out of a Wood Floor

Split red wine spoils the stunning natural aesthetics of wood flooring in homes. Red wine contains a mixture of acids, tannins and alcohol that permeates and discolors wood. The longer red wine spends on wooden floor boards, the more insoluble the acids, tannins and alcohol become. Like all spills on wood floors, red wine requires rapid removal lest it permanently set in wood fibers and discolor floors. Immediately eradicate red wine from a wood floor to restore and preserve your investment.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot excess wine off the wood floor using absorbent paper towels. Always blot the wood with fresh portions of the towels.

    • 2

Dampen a lint-free cloth with water. Twist the cloth twice to drain out excess water.

    • 3

Wipe the cloth over the remaining wine stain on the wood floor. Remove as much sticky grime and wine residue from the wood as possible.

    • 4

Dry the wood with clean, absorbent paper towels.

    • 5

Examine the wood for remaining wine. If the red stain lingers, stir together 2 ounces of rottenstone with 1/4 teaspoon of boiled linseed oil. Mix the oily paste inside a bowl.

    • 6

Dip another lint-free cloth in the oily paste. Rub the oily paste over the remaining wine-stained wood, following the wood grain.

    • 7

Continue rubbing the wine-stained wood with the oily paste until the wine stain disappears or you are unable to extract any more wine from the floor.

    • 8

Wipe remaining rottenstone fragments off the wood using another cloth.

    • 9

Buff the wood with clean, absorbent paper towels.
