How to Do a Deliming Acid Wash on a Toilet

The toilet bowl is an area that sees frequent use. Besides gathering stains from dust, dirt and waste, toilets are also subject to accumulating mineral deposits. These deposits, which are often termed "lime scale," stem from minerals in tap water. The most effective means of dissolving lime scale is to use an acidic cleaning product. Remove mineral deposits from your toilet by using either a store bought or a homemade de-liming acid wash.

Instructions

  1. Store Products

    • 1

Squirt a store-bought toilet bowl cleaner into the inside of the toilet bowl, including under the edges of the rim. Check the label on the bottle to ensure that it is acid-based. Many liquid toilet bowl cleaners contain either hydrochloric, phosphoric or oxalic acid as the main ingredient.

    • 2

Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the acid to start breaking down the lime scale.

    • 3

Scrub away the lime scale using a moistened toilet brush. If there are small areas that are still stained, use a moistened toothbrush to scrub these areas.

    • 4

Flush the toilet to remove any lingering lime deposits.

    Homemade Product

    • 5

Pour undiluted white vinegar or lemon juice into an empty spray bottle.

    • 6

Spray the inner surfaces of the toilet.

    • 7

Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the acid in the vinegar or lemon juice to begin dissolving the lime scale.

    • 8

Remove the lime scale by scrubbing it with a toilet brush or toothbrush for smaller areas.

    • 9

Flush the toilet to rinse away any sediment.
