How to Clean White Grunge on Crystal Glasses

Crystal glasses should be washed by hand rather than in the dishwasher. One problem with washing crystal and other glassware in the dishwasher is etching. Etching is the term used to describe surface erosion on crystal or glassware, giving it a white, grungy appearance. It is caused from several factors, including the use of too much detergent, and it is not removable. Hopefully, the white grunge on your crystal glasses is a film caused from hard water deposits. If so, it should easily come off with white vinegar.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a soft rag with white vinegar. Rub the crystal glasses with the rag until the white grunge disappears. If it doesn't disappear, the white grunge on your crystal is etching, which is permanent and cannot be removed.

    • 2

Soak the crystal glasses in white vinegar for one minute if some of the film remains, especially around a design that is harder to clean with just a rag. Afterward, wipe the film off with a wet rag. You can also use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas.

    • 3

Wash the crystal glasses in warm, soapy water, and rinse them under warm running water.

    • 4

Dry the crystal glasses with an absorbent towel to prevent spotting.
