How to Get Melted Styrofoam out of a Couch

Styrofoam is convenient for parties and get-togethers, making for easy cleanup. However, when a Styrofoam plate or cup ends up melted on your couch, it creates a mess. Since Styrofoam isn't made to stand up to heat, it can melt quickly when it comes in contact with anything hot, including a cigarette. Once the Styrofoam melts, the cleanup process is similar to that of removing melted plastic. You can get melted Styrofoam out of your couch but must do so with supplies and methods that preserve the upholstery.

Things You'll Need

  • Ice cubes
  • Sandpaper
  • Hand vacuum
  • 1/8 cup acetone-based nail polish remover

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the melted Styrofoam to harden on the surface of your couch. Apply a plastic bag filled with ice cubes to speed up the process.

    • 2
Sandpaper removes most of the Styrofoam without damaging upholstery.

Remove the bag of ice from the hardened Styrofoam. Sand the hardened substance to wear it down as close as possible to the couch upholstery.

    • 3

Vacuum the surface of your couch with a hand vacuum to remove the sanded Styrofoam dust.

    • 4

Pour 1/8 cup of acetone-based nail polish remover into a shallow bowl. Dip a soft scrub brush into the nail polish remover to dampen the bristles.

    • 5

Scrub lightly over the Styrofoam residue to dissolve the remainder with the nail polish remover. Wipe the couch with a dry cloth.

    • 6

Pour 2 cups of warm water into a bowl and add 1 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. Dampen a clean cloth with the detergent solution. Sponge the couch upholstery to wash off the nail polish remover.

    • 7

Rinse your couch's upholstery by dabbing it with a damp cloth. Press a dry cloth into the surface to absorb moisture. Let your couch air dry completely.
