The Best Way to Get Gum Out of a Fryer

Repeated use of grease and oil requires you to clean your fryer regularly. Oil left on the surface can develop into a baked-on, gum-like layer that is difficult to remove. This happens as a result of carbonization, when the oil or grease adheres to the surface through repeated exposure to heat. A gummy fryer surface attracts other dirt and stain material. The best way for you to get gum out of a fryer is with the use of supplies and methods that remove the residue without damaging the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the fryer to cool until warm but not hot. Remove any grease remaining from your last use.

    • 2

Remove the fryer basket and set aside. Fill the fryer basin with club soda and allow it to soak for 10 minutes to loosen the gummed-on grease.

    • 3

Empty the fryer basin to remove the club soda. Wet a nylon mesh sponge with the club soda. Sprinkle table salt onto the sponge.

    • 4
Table salt breaks down grease and adds extra scrubbing power.

Scrub the surface of the fryer basin with the salt to remove the gummed-on grease. Add more salt as needed to loosen and lift the greasy residue.

Vinegar is an effective, natural grease cutter.

Fill a dishpan with full-strength white vinegar. Set the fryer basket in the vinegar and allow it to soak for 20 minutes to remove grease.

    • 6

Clean the inside of the fryer basin while the basket soaks. Moisten a paper towel with the vinegar and wipe out the basin. Dry it with another towel.

    • 7

Scrub the fryer basket with a scrub brush and the vinegar to remove gummed-on grease residue. Rinse the basket with water. Invert the basket on a towel and allow it to air-dry.
