Care of Acrylic Fabric

Known for its warmth and soft texture, acrylic fabric is a lightweight, flexible fabric made of synthetic fibers. Socks, sweaters, and sportswear are commonly made of acrylic fabric due to its shape retention and porosity. Unlike cotton and many other natural fabrics, acrylic fabric is extremely resistant to moths, wrinkles and shrinkage. Nonetheless, acrylic fabric requires care to maintain its texture and general appearance. While acrylic fabric is low maintenance, certain washing techniques help keep it looking new.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the acrylic garment inside out to prevent the acrylic fibers from unraveling and balling up in the wash.

    • 2

Set the washing machine on the delicate cycle and warm water setting. Pour 2 oz. of laundry detergent into the running water.

    • 3

Place the acrylic garment in the washing machine. Let the washing machine complete its cycles. Add 2 oz. of fabric softener to the wash as the machine completes its final rinse cycle. Fabric softener reduces static electricity in acrylic fabric.

    • 4

Remove the acrylic garment from the wash. Roll the garment tightly into a bath towel to absorb moisture from the fabric.

    • 5

Unroll the bath towel and garment. Flip the garment right side out, and lay it flat on a fresh bath towel to air-dry.

    • 6

Examine the garment for wrinkles. If the garment is slightly wrinkled, iron the acrylic fabric with an iron set on a moderate heat setting.

    • 7

Hang the dry garment on a nonmetal hanger to keep the acrylic fabric looking its best.
