Can I Use Clorox Cleaner in the Laundry?

Dingy whites have been the bane for many who use washing detergent alone. By using Clorox, or any bleach product, whites get whiter and tough stains disappear. Clorox bleach cleaner can go in the laundry for whites, but make sure to keep it away from your colors, as bleach will fade the fabric or leave white splotches.
  1. How to

    • Start the washing machine, filling enough to clean the load. Add detergent and the recommended amount of bleach (3/4 cup for a standard load) to the bleach reservoir. If there isn't a chamber, add directly to the water. Put in your clothes and let the cycle run. Run the clothing through another cycle if more bleaching is needed.

    Heavy-Soiled

    • When you have stubborn or heavily-soiled garments, a few extra steps may be needed. Rinse the stained area with clean water to remove loose residue. Mix 1/4 cup of Clorox per gallon of cool water and soak the garment for five minutes. Wash immediately after soaking, using the suggested amount of bleach for the size of the load. If the fabric is especially bleach-safe, spot-treat using Clorox directly on the affected area.

    Care Symbols

    • Make sure to check your clothing care labels to see if you can use bleach, as some clothes are too delicate for bleach. The symbols for bleaching instructions include a black-outlined triangle, which means it is okay to use bleach. A triangle with diagonal lines means you can use non-chlorine bleach and a blackened triangle that is crossed out means you cannot use any type of bleach.

    Additional Products

    • Clorox offers a number of laundry-related products to clean whites, colors, delicates and even the washing machine itself. Clorox 2 is the company's color-safe bleach, while Clorox Ultimate Care Bleach is gentle enough for delicate fabrics and safe enough to pour right onto the white clothing. Clorox Washing Machine Cleaner gets rid of the grime that builds up over time.
