How to Determine the Strength of Laundry Bleach

Bleach is not a chemical that can be used on all types of surfaces. For example, there are certain fabrics and items of clothing that will get ruined if you use bleach along with the wash. Always check clothing care instructions on the tags before you use bleach in the laundry. However, other clothing items can be used with bleach and the bleach can actually brighten and disinfect the clothes very well. But this does not mean you can use as much bleach as you want. The strength of the bleach still needs to be properly diluted in your washing machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a chlorine bleach product that is made for use with laundry. Check the label instructions to be sure.

    • 2

Read the label on the product carefully. Most manufacturers will provide specific instructions for the safe strength of their bleach product with laundry.

Measure out the amount of bleach for the washing machine that is safe to use with the clothes. In many cases, the strength indicated will be about 8 oz. of bleach per 20 gallons of water. This is a 1:300 ratio.

Add the bleach to the wash along with your regular laundry detergent. Allow the load to run through the full rinse cycle to be sure all of the bleach is rinsed away.
