Sweat Odor Removal

Sweaty clothes may require additional measures to remove odors than simple washing. The protein in sweat does not always break down completely in the wash, leaving your clothes with a sweaty odor. Shoes, especially footwear worn during workouts or sports, also harbor odors from sweating feet. Remove embarrassing sweat odors from clothes and shoes by using absorbents that soak the smell out of fabric and footwear.

Instructions

  1. Clothes

    • 1

Fill a sink with cool water and 1/2 cup white vinegar.

    • 2

Place the sweat soaked clothes into the water and swish to distribute the vinegar evenly. Do not crowd the clothing; soak only a few items at a time. Allow the clothes to remain in the sink for 30 minutes.

    • 3

Drain the sink and squeeze out excess water from the clothes. Avoid wringing the fabric, but gently squish the water from the material with your hands.

    • 4

Pour baking soda over any sweat stains on the clothing. Rub the baking soda into the stains with your fingers.

    • 5

Place the clothes into the washer and clean according to the care label instructions, using 2 Tbsp liquid detergent.

    • 6

Dry the clothing outside on a clothesline or on a drying rack to allow air to circulate through the clothes and give them a fresh smell.

    Shoes

    • 7

Sprinkle 2 tbsp. baking soda inside each shoe. Rub the powder into the inside of the shoe with your hand. The powder absorbs excess moisture and odor.

    • 8

Set odor-filled shoes on a table in direct sunlight. The sun's rays will dry the moisture, while the fresh air circulates inside the shoe.

    • 9

Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar. Rub the inside of the shoe with the cloth. The vinegar destroys bacteria and absorbs odors. Leave the shoes in a well-ventilated area to dry.
