How to Wash Angora Rabbit Fibers

The fur of angora rabbits is collected when the animal sheds every few months. These fibers have hollow centers which give them the insulating qualities that make angora widely used in the production of sweaters and winter scarves. The fibers are susceptible to shrinkage if laundered improperly. To ensure that your angora sweater, hat or mittens do not shrink or become warped, they must be hand washed and air dried.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a sink or wash basin half way with lukewarm water. Do not use hot water as this will cause damage to the angora fibers.

    • 2

Add 2 tbsps. of wool and cashmere shampoo to the water. Stir the water to incorporate the shampoo.

    • 3

Lower the angora item into the water and gently wash. Avoid squeezing the piece as this will cause damage to the delicate angora fibers.

    • 4

Remove the angora piece from the water and rinse it out thoroughly with cool water.

    • 5

Set the angora piece on a towel. Roll the towel and gently squeeze the angora piece to remove excess water. Hold the angora piece and towel over the wash basin or sink when squeezing to prevent making a mess. Never wring or twist the angora piece as this will lead to damage.

    • 6

Lay the angora piece on a dry towel and allow it to completely air dry. Flip the piece every two to three hours to allow both sides to dry evenly. Avoid setting the angora piece and towel in direct sunlight to avoid discoloration.
