How to Clean Acetate Fabric

Acetate is a synthetic, man-made fabric that looks like silk. Acetate does not wrinkle easily, does not shrink easily, and does not absorb moisture easily. The fabric is soft, but is not very strong, and needs to be carefully laundered. Acetate is usually dry-clean only, but some types of acetate can be gently hand-washed. Keep acetate fabric away from rubbing alcohol and anything with acetone in it, including nail polish remover.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the fabric label to see if you can hand-wash the acetate or if it is dry-clean only.

    • 2

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and 1 teaspoon of mild detergent.

    • 3

Gently agitate the water with the garment in it, being careful not to twist, wring, or rub the acetate fabric against itself.

    • 4

Use a cool iron on the wet fabric to push some of the water out of it. Look closely to see what type of knit the garment has. If it's a circular knit, do not press an iron on it.

    • 5

Lay the garment flat until it dries completely.
