Care of Silkworm Blankets

Anyone who has owned silk knows just how delicate the material is and how important it is to use the proper precautions when cleaning silk. While you should always consult the labels on your silk for cleaning instructions, as a general rule, most silk can be hand washed without damaging the fabric. As long as the right cleaning products are used and plenty of care is taken, you can keep your silk looking clean and beautiful for a long time to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your bowl, basin or bucket with warm water.

    • 2

Place the silk blanket in the water.

    • 3

Add 2 or 3 tbsp. of mild, non-alkaline soap to the water and gently massage the soapy water into the blanket.

    • 4

Add white vinegar to the water during the last few seconds of scrubbing to help the soap residue come off easily.

    • 5

Remove the silk from the water. Do not allow it to soak.

    • 6

Hang the blanket from a plastic hanger out of direct sunlight to air dry. Do not use wood hangers or pins to hang the silk, as it can stain the fabric. Also, do not squeeze the fabric or ring the water out of it. This can cause the fabric to lose its shape.
