How to Deodorize a Prom Gown at Home

A prom gown is simply different from any other dress: It's a physical symbol of a rite of passage. If you've stored your prom dress in a musty basement or attic, or if you've packed it in a suitcase or the trunk of a car for several days, it could have taken on a musty, unpleasant odor. While dry-cleaning is ideal for such a special garment, you many not have the time or be in a location where such facilities are available. Luckily, you can take care of this problem at home.

Instructions

  1. The Quick Fix

    • 1

Turn the dress inside out. Spray the inside of the dress with a household fabric spray. Alternatively, fill a spray bottle with a mixture of half water and half vodka. Shake well and then spray.

    • 2

Continue to spray the dress until you've sprayed it evenly. You don't want to saturate the dress so that it's sopping wet; you just want to mist it, thoroughly but lightly.

    • 3

Hang the dress on a hanger, still keeping it inside out. Hang the dress outside in a breezy area until it is completely dry. When it's fully dried, the dress will be odor free.

    The Longer Solution

    • 4

Fill two fabric or mesh bags each with 1/2 cup baking soda or ground coffee. Place the dress inside a plastic garment bag on a hanger.

    • 5

Place the bags of baking soda or coffee with the dress. Zip up the bag. Cover any openings or cracks in the bag with masking or packing tape.

    • 6

Allow the dress to sit in the garment bag for two or three days. The coffee or baking soda will fully absorb the odors. You might have to dust the dress off slightly to remove any remaining baking soda or coffee, but it will be odor free.
