Blot up any stains right away with a white cloth. After excess liquid is removed, dab the stain with cool water.
Check the label. If it says, "Dry Clean Only," do not attempt to wash the outerwear. Take it to a reliable dry cleaner. If it is washable, make sure the garment can be washed by machine. If it must be washed by hand, follow instructions on the garment carefully. If machine washing is permitted, put the washer dials on cold wash, cold rinse. Add the right amount and type of detergent for the garment and start the machine.
Place the outerwear in the washing machine and run on a gentle cycle.
Remove the outerwear from the washer. Hang it from a line, lay it flat to dry or put it in the dryer, if recommended. Set the dryer to low heat.
Store your outerwear somewhere cool and dark. Do not wrap it in plastic or place it in a storage bin, even if the season is over and you don't intend to wear it again for several months.
