Do Clothes Fade in the Dryer?

The drying machine is a wondrous appliance, made with the ability to turn red shirts pink and black pants gray. Despite the fact that such things happens regularly, you don't have to live with it. Use gentler drying methods and color-preserving products to make your clothes' original colors last longer.
  1. How It Happens

    • If you follow the manufacturer's instructions, you should empty your dryer's lint trap every time you do a load of laundry to prevent fires. What you remove from the lint trap is proof of what happens to your clothes inside the dryer: they become weaker. As writers for the Clothesline Campaign explain, the heat from the machine damage your clothes, resulting in faded color.

    Drying Alternatives

    • Line drying avoids the direct heat from the dryer, which prevents your clothes from fading as quickly. Check with your local homeowners association before putting up a clothesline, since some find them unattractive and will require you to remove yours.

    Products

    • Color preservation starts when you wash your clothes. Choose a detergent that claims to prevent fading; for example, detergent that preserves black or bright colors.

    Restoring Faded Clothes

    • Perhaps the worst thing about your clothes fading in the dryer is having to buy replacements. While this may be necessary with printed fabrics, you can dye solid-colored clothing. Clothes dye is available at grocery stores and crafts stores.
