How to Clean Nylon Fabric

Nylon fabric is a stretchy, wrinkle-free material used to make clothing, swimsuits and lingerie. It's also found in decorative home items like curtains and rugs. Nylon absorbs moisture poorly, making it resistant to stains and heavy soiling. A synthetic fabric, nylon isn't made from plant or animal fibers; instead it is a type of plastic. Most nylon withstands machine laundering if done properly, but high temperatures can cause the plastic in the fabric to melt.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate fabrics by color. Wash dark colored nylon fabric with other colored fabrics with similar care instructions. Clean light colored nylon fabric alone, as it attracts dye from other fabrics.

    • 2

Place delicate nylons, such as pantyhose and lingerie items, in a mesh laundry bag. Fasten any plastic or metal closures, including bra closures and swimsuit strap fasteners, on the nylon items before placing them in the bag.

    • 3

Wash the nylon fabric in warm water on the delicate cycle of your washing machine. Use a mild detergent that doesn't contain bleach. Alternatively, wash delicate items by hand in a sink filled with warm water using a mild detergent. Rinse in clear water before drying.

    • 4

Spread the nylon items out flat on towels to dry. Alternatively, machine dry the items on the gentle cycle at the lowest temperature setting.

    • 5

Remove the items from the dryer immediately after the cycle ends. Fold or hang the nylon items immediately.
