How to Remove Food Spots From a Suit Coat

It is not uncommon for a suit coat to develop spots and stains, especially when you consume food while wearing the garment. When dealing with food spots or stains it is best to remove them as soon as possible. The longer the stain sits on the suit coat the harder removing it becomes. Before attempting to clean the suit coat, read and follow all cleaning instructions printed on the label. The removal process depends on what type of material the suit coat is made from and whether it is washable or not.

Instructions

  1. Non-washable Suit Coats

    • 1

Scrape any remaining food carefully off the suit coat with a plastic spoon.

    • 2

Lay the suit coat on a flat surface, with the food stain facing up. Fold a white towel in half and place it directly under the food stain.

    • 3

Pour club soda into a small bowl. Dip the corner of a clean, white cloth in the club soda.

    • 4

Rub the edges of the food stain gently with the club soda, working from the edges of the stain toward the center. Continue in this manner until the food stain is no longer visible.

    • 5

Dampen a clean, white cloth with dry-cleaning solvent if the stain is still present. Blot the remaining stain with the damp cloth. Start at the edge of the food stain and blot while slowly moving in toward the center. Continue in this manner until the suit coat can no longer absorb any liquid.

    • 6

Blot the jacket dry with a white towel.
