How to Bleach Polyester

So that lime green polyester dress you bought last summer seemed like a much better idea in the store than when you got it home. Neon green really isn't the right color for you and something must be done about this dress taking up space in your closet. You could always give it to a friend or donate it to charity. Or you can make it work and keep the dress in your own wardrobe. With a little bleach you can transform that ghastly hue into something more desirable right in your own laundry room.

Instructions

Read the packaging on the bottle of bleach carefully to determine the appropriate ration of bleach to water. Some brands of bleach are already diluted while others are more potent so it is very important to read the label before opening the bottle even if you have bleached polyester in the past.

Adjust the settings on the washing machine to use warm water and start the fill cycle. Allow the machine to fill completely before moving on to the next step.

    • 3

Pour bleach in to the water then add laundry detergent. It is a good idea to wait about a minute or so after pouring in bleach before adding the detergent. This will allow the bleach to mix fully with the water.

    • 4

Place the article of polyester clothing you wish to bleach in the washing machine. Let all the washer run all cycles before removing the fabric.

    • 5

Repeat steps 1 through 3 if necessary. Hang the clothing on a line or place in a dryer after the desired color has been achieved.
