How to Make a Fabric Water Repellent

Nothing ruins a new pair of blue suede shoes or your outdoor canopy like a surprise rain storm. Fabrics naturally absorb water, causing them to become heavy and waterlogged, which in some cases can damage the fabric. When you treat a fabric with a water repellent, the water will bead up and roll off the fabric instead of soaking in. Sprayable water repellents are easy to use on patio furniture, boat cushions, backpacks, clothes and shoes and should not change the look or feel of most washable fabrics.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a sprayable water repellent. Sprayable repellents are available online and in department stores.

    • 2

Lay the fabric on a clean surface. Remove any debris, lint or dirt from the fabric.

    • 3

Test the spray on an inconspicuous area of the fabric, such as the inside of a far corner. The spray should not affect the appearance of the fabric, but it's best to be sure before applying it all over.

    • 4

Spray the can in a sweeping motion over the fabric, holding it 8 inches away.

    • 5

Allow the repellent to dry for at least 12 hours, then turn the fabric over and spray the other side.
