How to Reverse Fabric Bleeding

When the color from one fabric bleeds into another fabric in the laundry, this is called "dye transfer." Although a challenge to repair, if you act quickly and carefully, you may be able to reverse fabric bleeding when it occurs. Take care not to take action that could set the dye transfer, instead work to remove the bleeding before it sets permanently in the fabric.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • Dishwashing tub
  • Enzyme presoak product
  • Chlorine or color-safe bleach
  • Color remover

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fabric items back into the washing machine immediately without drying them in the dryer. Add the appropriate amount of laundry detergent and rewash the items. Remove the items and check the fabric bleeding area. If the dye transfer remains, do not dry the items in the dryer or you may set the stains.

    • 2

Fill the dishwashing tub or sink with warm water and add the appropriate amount of enzyme presoak to the water. Swish the water around with your hands to dissolve the presoak product. Place the items into the tub or sink and soak them for about 10 minutes.

Remove the items from the presoak and place them back in the washing machine. Add chlorine bleach for white items or color-safe bleach for colored items. Add laundry detergent and set the washing machine to a standard cycle. Remove the items after the washing machine finishes and check the fabric bleed.

Place the items back in the washing machine and set the machine to hot water. Add the color remover product and set the machine to a regular wash cycle. Allow the wash cycle to complete. Rewash the items another time with regular laundry detergent after the color remover cycle finishes.

Dry the items after removing the dye transfer. As long as you succeeded in removing the dye transfer, dry the items in the dryer. If any of the dye transfer remains, air-dry the items to avoid setting the stains. The dye transfer may fade over time to become less noticeable.
