How to Wash Closed Loop Oily Rags

Closed loop is recycling an item into a similar form to help keep the environment free from unnecessary trash. For example, using old towels or cloths for cleaning rags is closed loop recycling. As with any other types of fabric, when closed loop rags become oily, normal laundering does little to remove the oil and typically leaves a residue on the fabric. Fortunately, a few inexpensive household items will help remove the oil from the closed loop rags.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup laundry detergent
  • 1 cup white vinegar

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the oily rags under cold running water for several seconds. The water will help rinse the oily residue out.

    • 2

Set the washing machine to a normal wash cycle with hot water. Add a 1/4 cup of laundry detergent either in the washing machine drum, or in the detergent receptacle.

    • 3

Pour one cup of white vinegar directly in the water-filled washing drum. The white vinegar will cut through grease, oil and grime, while removing any trapped odors in the closed loop rags.

    • 4

Submerge the rags in the washing machine and close the lid. Allow the washing machine to complete the wash, rinse and spin cycles.

    • 5

Remove the rags and tumble dry on low heat or air dry the rags.
