How to Shrink Preshrunk Cotton

Preshrunk cotton is so named because it is shrunken by the manufacturer so that it will be the appropriate fit for the customer. This is so that it is still wearable after first wash. However, if you have stretched the material out over time, lost some weight or simply could not find a garment small enough, you may still need to shrink it a bit to fit. Even preshrunk cotton could be resized without having to making difficult alterations.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the cotton in a standard washer. Use the hottest possible water setting. The heat is the key to shrinking the material. Instead of using a washer, you can place the cotton in a stockpot, cover with water and bring to a boil. This will get the water very hot and in the best condition for shrinking. Monitor carefully to be sure the garment doesn't burn.

Place the soaking wet garment into a dryer. You may lightly wring it out if desired, but do not let it air dry. Turn the dryer to its highest hot setting. Dry for 30 to 40 minutes. For best results and maximum shrinkage, wash and dry alone.

Assess the new fit of your cotton garment. Because the cotton is preshrunk, it will likely not shrink as much as you would like on first try. You may need to repeat the previous steps in order to get the right fit.
