Homemade Laundry Detergent Using Oxiclean

What is Oxi-Clean

• Oxi-Clean is a powdered formula that typically goes into the washing machine with your detergent. You can include it in your laundry detergent to help fight stains. Oxi-Clean can be purchased without dyes, fragrances or chlorine. You can purchase a special blend made specifically for baby messes, such as diapers, spit-up or baby food; mix up a batch of laundry detergent specifically for your baby.

Recipe #1

• Crumble and shred one bar of laundry soap. You can use Ivory brand, Fels-Naptha or any other you like. Add 1/2 cup each of borax, Oxi-Clean and washing soda. It should be very grainy, much like a powdered laundry detergent. Store the soap in an airtight container or zip-top bag. Give the bag or container a good shake before you use it, to redistribute the ingredients.

Recipe #2

• In a large bag or container, mix 55 oz. of washing soda, 1/2 cup of borax, 2 cups of Oxi-Clean, 1/2 cup of household cleaner and 1/2 cup of Calgon powder. Mix the ingredients together with your hands or a large spoon and store it in an airtight container. If you want to use this as a baby detergent, use the Oxi-Clean Baby Stain Soaker.

How to Use

• Start the water in your washing machine. Add roughly 1/8 cup of powdered detergent to your machine. If you don't feel your clothes are getting clean enough, add more; if you have a very small load, use less soap. Let the tub fill about halfway with water before adding your clothing. This allows the detergent granules to dissolve before being crowded by the fabric. Wash on any setting you prefer and dry as normal.
