How to Reduce Lint After Washing

Nothing is more infuriating than spending hours washing and drying laundry only to have it covered with tiny balls of lint. The lint is caused by towels, sweaters, sweatshirts and flannel that create tiny pieces of broken threads and yarn balls that break off during production, wearing and laundering. Cut down on the lint after washing to ensure that your clothes come out pristine.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe out the inside of the washing machine and dryer before using with a damp cloth. This will remove any lint that is stuck to the inner walls of the machines.

    • 2

Shake out the items before and after using the washing machine. This will remove any large lint balls and loose threads from the garment before they have a chance to adhere to your other clothing.

    • 3

Launder any lint-covered garments together to ensure the lint balls do not transfer to your other clothing. This includes sweaters, sweatpants and towels.

    • 4

Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the washing machine with the detergent rinse cycle. This will help break down some of the chemicals in the laundry detergent that are causing the lint to adhere to clothing.

    • 5

Avoid overloading the washer to achieve the best results. Instead, fill the washer no more than one-half to three-quarters full to ensure that the clothes are effectively agitated.

    • 6

Empty out the dryer's lint trap before using. This will ensure that the lint from the clothing has somewhere to go during the drying cycle.

    • 7

Examine the clothing after it is removed from the dryer. If there is an excessive amount of lint, especially on clothing such as corduroy and velvet that is prone to attracting lint, remove it with masking tape or a lint removing tool.
