How to Remove the Smell From Sheep's Wool

One of the oldest fibers for clothing in the world, sheep's wool has been keeping people warm since around 4000 B.C. This thick and luxuriously warm material is optimal for blankets and winter sweaters. If your wool has picked up a smell that you find offensive or downright unpleasant, you will need to do some careful cleaning to get rid of it. Sheep's wool is fragile, but with the proper care, this irritating odor can be successfully eliminated.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the wool fabric outside and shake it out to remove any loose bits of dirt or debris.

    • 2

Fill the sink with water and add 2 to 3 tbsp. of a very mild soap or shampoo.

    • 3

Submerge the wool in the water and allow it to soak for up to five minutes.

    • 4

Expel the water gently with your hands by pressing, not twisting, as this may damage the fabric.

    • 5

Rinse the fabric with cool to lukewarm running water to get rid of residual soap.

    • 6

Expel excess moisture again with your hands gently.

    • 7

Place the garment on flat surface to dry in a cool, dry spot.

    • 8

Fill the bottom of a box with baking soda.

    • 9

Place a wire rack inside the box to set the wool onto so that it doesn't touch the baking soda.

    • 10

Set the fabric into the box onto the rack and close the box.

    • 11

Keep the fabric in the box for 24 to 48 hours to allow the baking soda to absorb lingering odors in the wool.
