How to Get Rid of the Smoke Smell in Clothing With Baking Soda

Even if you aren't a smoker, it only takes being around cigarette smoke to smell like one. Cigarette and cigar smoke clings to fabrics, putting off that stale smoke smell until they are washed. If you're tired of this unpleasant and unhealthy odor and want to make sure that it goes away, baking soda provides an efficient and eco-friendly solution. By absorbing odors, baking soda freshens fabrics, leaving them smelling clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the clothes into the washing machine.

    • 2

Turn on the washing machine and allow it to fill up with hot water or the warmest water the clothing can handle. Check the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Add 1 cup of baking soda to the water and turn off the washing machine.

    • 4

Leave the clothing to soak for one to two hours.

    • 5

Turn the washing machine back on and let it resume the cycle, adding in the laundry detergent at this point.

    • 6

Transfer the clothing to the dryer as soon as it's ready. If the sun is shining, hang the clothing outside to dry instead as the sunlight and fresh air will help to eliminate any possible lingering odors.

    • 7

Smell the fabric once it is dry to see if the smoke smell is gone.

    • 8

Place the clothing into a plastic bag and sprinkle baking soda all over it if the smell is still there.

    • 9

Tie the bag up and place it in a cool, dry place for 24 to 48 hours to eliminate the lingering smoke odor.

    • 10

Remove the clothing from the bag and shake it off.

    • 11

Rewash the clothing to make sure all the baking soda is gone.
