How to Care for a Cowichan Sweater

Cowichan sweaters have long been made by Native Americans, hand knitted using traditional techniques and raw sheep's wool. The traditional patterns and designs lend a natural, earthy look to the garment, and the natural wool provides warmth. To keep the Cowichan sweater looking its best, wash with the correct routine. This allows you to remove soil from the sweater while keeping it looking like new.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the sink with about 2 gallons lukewarm water and 1 tsp. wool soap. Swish the water with your hands to dissolve the soap.

    • 2

Dip either the entire sweater into the soapy water or just the soiled areas if you wish to spot clean. Swish the sweater in the water and work away residue with your fingers.

    • 3

Drain the water and rinse the sweater twice with lukewarm water. Squeeze as much water as possible out of the sweater.

    • 4

Lay the sweater between two towels and roll the towels tightly to squeeze out any excess water from the sweater.

    • 5

Lay the sweater flat on a towel or dry surface and allow to air dry completely.
