How do I Iron a Collared Shirt?

The difference between a crisp, smooth shirt and a wrinkled shirt is ironing. Knowing how to iron a collared shirt is imperative, especially if you work in an occupation that requires daily wear of a collared shirt. Regardless if the shirt claims to be "wrinkle-free," it is always best to iron the fabric. Use an iron that allows for multiple settings so the fabric will match with the heat allowance. In addition, use water to help smooth wrinkles during the ironing process.

Fill the water reserve of the iron with cool water. Tap water is sufficient; however, hard tap water will leave mineral deposits within the iron causing it to not heat properly or cause spitting. Use distilled water if you have hard water at home.

    • 2

Set the temperature to match the type of shirt fabric. The interior label will contain the fabric information, such as cotton or polyester. The iron will reflect the maximum heat allowance for the fabric of the shirt. Wait for the iron to heat completely before ironing.

    • 3

Unbutton the shirt and lay it face down on the ironing board. You will be ironing the collar first; therefore, do not worry about the rest of the shirt. Hold the collar open with one hand and apply the iron with the other hand. Work from the pointed peaks of the collar and move inward. When applying heat to the collar, pick the iron up and press downward so the collar is stiff. Repeat with the other side of the collar.

Turn the collar down to resemble the everyday look. Use the iron to press along the seam of the collar to create a crease.

    • 5

Adjust the shirt so thin end of the ironing board is tucked into the shoulder areas. Glide the ironing board over the shoulder area. As you move the ironing board around, use your hands to help smooth the wrinkles and move the shirt so you iron the front and the back.

    • 6

Fold the sleeve in half. The fold will be made along the existing seam line. Lay the sleeve flat against the ironing board and lay the cuff flat against the board. Use your hand and fingers to smooth any large wrinkles before apply the iron. Use the iron on one side of the sleeve, then flip the sleeve and repeat on the other side.

Move to the body of the shirt by laying it face down on the ironing board. Start with the back of the shirt and lay it flat. Use your hands to smooth any large wrinkles before beginning. Glide the iron around the back of the shirt before moving to the sides or front.

Pull the shirt to either side and work your way around to the front of the shirt, near the buttons. Once you reach the buttons, simply use the tip of the iron to iron around the buttons and remove the wrinkles.
