How to Clean a Swimsuit Before Wearing It

New swimsuits can look so cute that you can't wait to get out to the pool or beach to show them off. While many stores have signs up asking that customers keep their undergarments on when trying on swimsuits, not everyone does -- wearing an unwashed suit could be like wearing your neighbor's underwear, or worse, several people's underwear if several people tried on the suit before you. Additives and extra dyes in the new suit can also cause skin rashes and stains, and an initial wash helps cut down on any extra chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the drain plug in your bathroom sink.

    • 2

Fill the sink with hot water and add some mild laundry detergent.

    • 3

Put on the gloves and swish the water and detergent around to mix them and create some suds.

    • 4

Drop the new swimsuit in the water and start swishing it around and kneading it. Get it nice and soapy.

    • 5

Lift the suit out of the water occasionally and squeeze out extra water. Continue kneading it in the water.

    • 6

Drain the water out and refill the sink with more hot water. If you want, add more detergent and put the suit through another round of kneading. After that, refill the sink with clean hot water.

    • 7

Dip the suit in again and swirl it around in the water a few times to release some of the soap. Drain the sink.

    • 8

Turn on the hot water and let it run. Hold the suit under the running water and inundate every part of the suit to rinse out the rest of the soap. Rinse both sides of the suit and hold it open so you can rinse inside as well. Squeeze out the suit a few times -- don't wring it as this will twist the fabric and ultimately weaken it -- and rinse again. Repeat this until you don't see any more soap when you squeeze out the suit.

Squeeze out as much of the water as you can. Hang the suit up over the bathtub or shower stall on a hanger or rack. Smooth out the suit; do not leave any wrinkles. Stick your hand inside the suit and separate the front and back so air can get inside. Wet swimsuit material can stick to itself, increasing the drying time. Dry thoroughly.
