Instructions

    • 1

Insert a darning egg into the sock so that the hole is centered over it. If you don't have a darning egg, any object that will give you something to hold on to as it stretches the sock slightly will work. A tennis ball is a good substitute.

    • 2

Thread a darning needle with yarn or thread that matches the sock. Choose yarn or thread that is about the same weight as the material the sock is made of.

    • 3

Anchor the yarn by taking one or two stitches at the end of the damaged part of the sock. The tail of the yarn should be inside the sock.

    • 4

Make straight stitches across the hole in the sock. The stitches should be close enough together that they touch, but don't overlap. When you reach the end of the hole use the needle to weave the yarn through the stitches you've just made. The result will be a net of yarn that completely covers the hole. At both ends of each cross row, take a small stitch through the sock to hold the weaving in place.
