How to Deodorize a Stinky Washing Machine

Foul odors can linger inside a washing machine if you wash a large amount of particularly smelly clothes at one time, or from leftover water sitting inside the machine for extended periods. This bad smell can transfer onto clothing items, making the clothes smell as if they have not been washed. Scrubbing the inside of the machine is not necessary, as you can rinse it out and eliminate bad odors using a couple of non-toxic ingredients.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the inside of the machine and remove all clothes and lint.

    • 2

Set the machine to its "Hot" setting.

    • 3

Turn the machine on. Wait until it fills up with hot water.

    • 4

Open the machine's door. Pour between 2 and 4 cups of distilled white vinegar and ½ cup baking soda into the machine.

    • 5

Turn the machine back on for about 5 minutes. This mixes the vinegar and baking soda with the hot water. Then, turn the machine off. Wait 30 to 60 minutes.

    • 6

Turn the machine back on. Let it completely finish running.

    • 7

Run one extra "Rinse" cycle to eliminate any leftover vinegar and/or baking soda.

    • 8

Wipe out the inside of the machine thoroughly with a cloth or towel. Leave the machine's door open for an hour or two, if possible, so the machine airs out.

    • 9

Inspect the machine for stinky odors. Repeat the cleaning process once more if unwanted smells remain.
