How to Get a Musty Smell Out of Stored Clothes and Shoes

Packing away your seasonal wardrobe saves space in your closet by removing all the clothes and shoes you won't be wearing for a few months. If these clothes aren't stored properly, the combination of moisture and darkness may allow the growth of mold or mildew, causing a musty odor. To remove this odor, the mold needs to be eliminated, which will leave your clothing fresh and ready to wear again.

Things You'll Need

  • Bleach-free laundry detergent
  • Bag or box

Instructions

    • 1

Hang your clothes outside in sunlight. Place your shoes outside in the sun as well.

    • 2

Allow the sunlight to shine on the clothes and shoes for at least an hour. Sunshine kills mold spores.

    • 3

Launder the clothing in hot water with a bleach-free detergent. Add 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar when the washing machine reaches the rinse cycle.

    • 4

Wipe down shoes, inside and out, with warm, soapy water and a sponge. Rinse them well with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Hang the clothing outside to air-dry in the sun. Set the shoes outside in sunlight as well.

    • 6

Place clothing and shoes that still smell musty into a box or plastic bag with a sock filled with baking soda.

    • 7

Set the bag or box in a cool, dry place for 48 to 72 hours to allow the baking soda to absorb the lingering odors.
