How to Wash Red Selvage Jeans

Selvage denim, which is denim made in the old-fashioned shuttle method, is primarily used to make men's jeans. The thread used to weave the fabric is one continuous thread that's woven back and forth, making a strong, tight weave all the way to the edge. Selvage jeans are characterized by the selvage edge sewn together down the leg seams with red thread. When the cuffs are turned up, the red, selvage edge is visible on the sides. Selvage denim, a specialty fabric, is typically dyed with indigo, and produced mainly in Japan. This type of denim requires more care when washing.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the jeans inside out to protect the indigo dye while washing.

    • 2

Fill the tub about halfway with cold water. Cold water will keep the dye from washing out and will help it last longer.

    • 3

Add 1 tsp. of gentle laundry soap per washing and swish it around to incorporate it in the water.

    • 4

Soak the jeans for 45 minutes, agitating them by hand every 15 minutes.

    • 5

Remove the jeans from the water, squeezing them gently to remove excess water. They don't require rinsing. Don't twist them, or this will stretch the jeans and cause them to be misshapen.

    • 6

Hang them to dry completely. Turn them right side out to wear.
