How to Keep T-Shirts From Shrinking

Any garment made of 100-percent cotton will shrink when exposed to heat, and T-shirts are no exception. But you don't have to compromise cleanliness to ensure a great fit and longer life for a T-shirt. Giving up hot water may seem like an impossibility, but it's necessary to avoid shrinking the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat stains before washing. Pour laundry detergent directly on a stain or problem area and rub the fabric together. Let soap set for a minute, then rinse under cold water.

    • 2

Wash T-shirts in the washing machine with cold water on the regular cycle. Avoid hot and warm water altogether.

    • 3

Dry T-shirts outdoors on a clothesline on cool or warm days. Avoiding the tumble dryer and its excessive heat will help keep your shirts intact.

    • 4

Dry T-shirts on a hanger indoors. On very hot and sunny days, the heat will shrink the fabric, so simply place them on clothes hangers and let them dry in the house.

    • 5

Iron T-shirts only after the shirt is completely dry. Heat exposed to a wet T-Shirt will shrink the fabric, so iron after the drying process is finished.
