How to Wash Viscose Clothing

Viscose, commonly known as regular rayon, is normally a dry clean only product. It has a low wet strength which can cause it to shrink or stretch if it becomes wet. High Wet Modulus (HWM) rayon is a modified viscose product which has a high wet strength and it can be washed normally. HWM rayon will be labeled polynosic on the tag. It is virtually impossible to visually tell the difference with these two products, so read the label to see which type you have. If you do have viscose rayon, then make sure to read the care label before laundering it.

Instructions

    • 1

Use lukewarm water to hand wash the clothing in a mild non-bleach detergent. Be gentle and add as little water as possible.

    • 2

Gently squeeze the garment dry. Do not wring it. Wringing it can cause it to permanent stretch out.

    • 3

Place a towel on a level surface.

    • 4

Place the garment flat onto the towel and roll the towel to absorb excess moisture from the garment.

    • 5

Smooth the garment out and lay it on a flat surface on top of another dry towel. Allow the garment to dry while sitting on the towel.
