How to Hang a Clothes Line on Wheel Spindles

Clotheslines have returned as a popular way to save money and be environmentally friendly when doing the wash. Even though clotheslines have been a part of Americana for centuries, some areas have codes about them since neighbors don't find them aesthetically pleasing. Once you determine if clotheslines are allowed in your community, they become an efficient method of clothes drying without the noise and dryer sheets.

Things You'll Need

  • Pair of poles, trees or hangers to attach the pulleys
  • 2 clothesline pulleys
  • 2 screw hooks
  • Clothesline rope
  • Rope tightener
  • Line separators
  • Scissors or sharp knife

Instructions

    • 1

Locate two stationary objects to hang the ends of the clothesline to. Use poles, large tree limbs or trunks, or walls for anchors.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the two ends with a folding measuring tape. This type of measuring tape can reach distances of 12 to 15 feet. Double the measured amount and add 10 feet. This will be the total amount of rope required to make the line. Cut the rope at the required length.

    • 3

Measure up and mark both anchor surfaces at 6 feet high. The height of the clothesline will keep the clothes from sagging on the ground.

    • 4

Drill starter holes at the marks deep enough to embed the screw tip of the hooks. Screw the hooks into the surfaces until the stem is fully embedded. Make sure the open face of the hook faces up.

    • 5

Hook a clothesline pulley to each hook by the pulley handle. The handle is the metal bracket attached to the outside of the pulley at the center of the pulley.

    • 6

Thread one end of the clothesline along the top of a pulley so the line goes between the wheel and the pulley handle toward the hook. Pull the line down to where it hangs freely.

    • 7

Walk the other end of the line to the opposite pulley. Thread the end of the clothesline along the top of a pulley so the line goes between the wheel and the pulley handle toward the hook. Pull the line down to where it hangs freely. You should have a single line spanning two pulleys with loose line hanging down between the pulley and the structure holding it.

    • 8

Draw both ends of the line together.

    • 9

Hold one end while you guide the other end through the tightener. Make a knot at the end of the threaded end to secure it inside the tightener. Thread the other end of the line through the other end of the tightener and make a knot to hold it inside the tightener.

    • 10

Pull the line in the tightener to reduce slack and add strength to the line. The tightener is what holds the line together and can be adjusted as the line loosens over time.

    • 11

Add the line separators at equidistant points between the middle of the line and the pulleys. These help eliminate sagging when heavy loads are on the line.
