How to Remove Tomato Sauce Stains From Seersucker

Tomato sauce in spaghetti or other dishes leaves a telltale orange or red stain when spilled on your seersucker garment. Seersucker is a type of cotton commonly worn in warm weather due to the thinness of the fabric. Because cotton garments can shrink when washed in hot water, care must be used in removing tomato sauce stains to keep your garment in top shape. Use the right stain removal supplies and gentle removal techniques to get rid of this unsightly stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stained seersucker fabric on a flat work surface. Remove tomato sauce by scraping it off with a spoon.

    • 2

Pour baking soda over the tomato sauce stain to absorb grease. Leave the baking soda on the seersucker fabric for 15 minutes to remove the oily portion of the stain.

    • 3

Saturate the tomato sauce stain with a spray stain remover. Allow the stain remover to soak into the fabric fibers for one to two minutes. Rinse the stain remover from the fabric.

    • 4

Wet a sponge with undiluted white vinegar. Blot the tomato sauce stain with the vinegar. Rinse the vinegar from the fabric. Repeat applications of stain remover and white vinegar until you have removed the stain.

Wash your seersucker garment in warm water with heavy-duty laundry detergent and oxygen bleach. Before drying the garment, check to make sure the entire tomato stain is gone. If any of the stain remains, apply heavy-duty laundry detergent to cover the stain, and rub it into the fabric. Leave the detergent on the seersucker fabric for 30 minutes, then wash it again.
