How to Fix Socks

Mending clothing that has minor rips, tears and holes can be a great way to save money and extend the life of favorite items. Socks are not hard to fix, but the process will take a bit of time and patience. Darning is a time-tested form of re-weaving, and can save a sock from the trash bin.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Darn it!

    • 1

Slip the light bulb into the sock so that the hole is on top. This supports the hole and makes it easier to repair.

    • 2

Create small stitches that circle the hole. Be sure to place them far enough in the material, away from the hole, so that it will not unravel again.

    • 3

Create long stitches running horizontally across the length of the hole. If the stitches here are too tight, bunching will occur in the material. Your goal is to create a framework of stitches that will enable you to re-weave the sock.

    • 4

Create vertical stitches by turning the sock after you have completed the horizontal stitches. Secure your thread by creating a few running stitches at the end of the row.

    • 5

Turn the sock the opposite way and complete another row of stitches. Repeat the process until the hole is repaired.
