Things to Keep Your Socks Together in the Laundry

Socks can be one of the most frustrating aspects of doing laundry. No matter how careful you are, you might end up with a bunch of orphan socks -- their mates just seem to have run away from being washed. You can use a variety of household items to help keep your socks together, but the easiest way to keep yourself from losing socks in the laundry is to pair them before you begin.
  1. Safety Pins

    • Pin socks together with safety pins prior to washing them; it's safe to use these pins in both the washer and the dryer. If you have young children, pin the socks for them and unpin them after they come out of the dryer. Older children may be able to assist with pinning and unpinning their own socks.

    O-Rings

    • Use O-rings as sock holders. You can use these rubber gaskets like a rubber band around your socks so that they stay together in the washer. However, you can't put O-rings in the dryer because the rubber will burn -- you must remove them and use a different securing method to put the socks in the dryer.

    Clips

    • Use a bag clip or other clips to keep socks together in the laundry. Some companies make sock holders that have a slit in the center so that you can push a pair of socks through the slit, which keeps them from separating in the laundry.

    Pairing

    • Fold pairs of socks together before putting them into the washer; you can also dry socks this way if you use a clothes dryer. If you use a clothesline, unfold the socks and pin them to the clothesline next to one another, so you'll be less likely to lose either one.
