How Do I Clean Play-Doh Out of Clothes?

Colored modeling clay, such as Play-Doh brand, is a common art substance used by children. Children can use the clay to make sculptures of nearly any subject matter, from food and animals to automobiles and buildings. Occasionally, children accidentally get the colored clay embedded in their clothing, which can stain and ruin the garment. You can clean Play-Doh and any residual stains off clothing using a few different household items.

Allow the Play-Doh to dry on the fabric. Hang up the garment so that it can dry completely. Scrape off as much of the clay as you can using a hard-bristled brush until most or all of the clay comes off.

Vacuum off bits of clay that persist on the garment after scraping. Use your vacuum's hose extension to vacuum the bits of remaining dough off the clothing.

    • 3

Wash the clothing with gentle soap and cold water. Dip the garment in cold water and apply a squirt of gentle soap where the Play-Doh is or to the area it stained. Rub the soap into the spot and gently scrub the area. Repeat this step as many times as necessary until the clay and subsequent stain is gone.

Wash the garment in your washing machine with liquid laundry detergent. Cover the stained area of the garment with liquid laundry detergent. Allow the detergent to sit on the stain for about three minutes. Fill your washing machine with cold water, place the garment in and presoak it for 10 to 15 minutes. Run the washing machine as you would for a normal load of laundry. Repeat this process as needed until the Play-Doh stain is gone.
