How to Get Crayons Out of a Bedspread

Crayola introduced its first crayons in 1903, and offers 120 colors today. That means that for over 100 years, parents have been trying to remove crayon stains from household surfaces, including fabric such as bedspreads. The chief ingredients in crayons are wax and pigment or dye, so the process of removing crayon from fabric involves softening or dissolving the wax and removing the stain from the pigment. The effectiveness of stain removal may vary depending on the color crayon used and the type of fabric stained.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape excess wax from the fabric using a dull knife or a plastic scraper. If the wax is too soft to scrape, press an ice cube wrapped in plastic on the wax until it hardens. Brush the scraped wax into the trash.

    • 2

Fold a paper towel in half and place it on the ironing board. Place the stained bedspread face down on the towel and place another paper towel on top.

    • 3

Press the warm iron over the towel-covered stain. Check the paper towel frequently and replace it with a clean one as it absorbs the wax. This will stop the stain from spreading to other parts of the bedspread. Continue ironing and changing towels until no new wax is being transferred to the clean paper towel.

    • 4

Treat the stained area with a laundry stain remover, following package directions.

    • 5

Wash the bedspread in the warmest water that is safe for the fabric. Use laundry detergent and a bleach product that is safe for the fabric.

    • 6

Check for stain removal and repeat stain removing and laundering steps if the stain is not gone. Dry the bedspread in the dryer only after the stain is completely removed.
