How to Get a Tomato Sauce Stain Out of a Cotton Sweater

Tomato sauce stains are often considered combination stains because sauce contains two kinds of stain-causing ingredients, namely tomato puree or tomato juice plus olive oil, butter or other kinds of greasy substances. Combination stains like these always require pretreatment before you wash the stained item. Sturdy fabrics like cotton hold up well to common stain treatment methods and products.

Things You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent
  • White cloth
  • Chlorine bleach or color-safe bleach

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cotton sweater to a sink. Hold the stained area under the faucet and rinse it with warm water.

    • 2

Pour laundry detergent directly on the tomato sauce stain. Use enough to cover the stain completely. Gently rub the detergent into both sides of the stain.

    • 3

Wash the cotton sweater in your washing machine along with other clothing items that are the same color. Use warm water and add detergent plus chlorine laundry bleach if the sweater is white. For a colored sweater, use detergent with color-safe bleach.

    • 4

Remove the sweater from the machine and inspect it to make sure the stain has been removed. If you still notice some discoloration, rewash the sweater.

    • 5

Hang the sweater to dry, dry it flat on a towel, or dry it in your clothes dryer.
