How to Get the Smell of Mothballs Out of Blankets

The pungent aroma of mothballs keeps moths from munching on your stored fabrics until you need them again, but when that time comes that same unpleasant odor can be rather off-putting for people as well. Mothballs slowly turn from a solid shape to gas over time. This chemical laden gas lingers in fabrics long after the mothballs disappear. If your stored blankets have retained this unpleasant and unhealthy odor, it is imperative to eliminate it before using them.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the blanket and hang it outside on a clothesline or drape it over a table or other piece of outdoor furniture. If it's raining or conditions don't allow this, hang it in the garage or another cool area of your home that facilitates good ventilation.

    • 2

Allow the previously stored blanket to air out for three to four hours.

    • 3

Move the blanket indoors and lay it flat in an area where it can sit undisturbed.

    • 4

Distribute baking soda evenly over the blanket in a thin layer and leave it overnight.

    • 5

Shake the blanket off over the trash to remove the baking soda or use a hand held vacuum cleaner to pick it up.

    • 6

Launder the blanket. Check the manufacturer's instructions and follow them closely.
