How to Cure Static Cling Without a Dryer Sheet

Static cling is uncomfortable and annoying, as it may ruin fashion statements or bring unwanted attention to clothing. Garments with different electrical charges attract, forcing the materials to cling to each other or to skin. Dry atmospheric conditions generally initiate static electricity and therefore static cling. While dryer sheets effectively alleviate static cling on clothing, they are coated with toxic chemical fragrances that can permeate skin and pose health risks. Fortunately, safe techniques effectively cure static cling without the need for dryer sheets.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin laundering the static-charged garment as normal, except substitute 1/2 cup of Borax for your ordinary laundry detergent. Proceed with your washer's washing cycle.

    • 2

Add another 1/2 cup Borax to the washer’s tub during the rinse cycle. Borax naturally alleviates static cling in garments. Let the machine complete its cycles.

    • 3

Moisten a washcloth with water. Place the moist washcloth and freshly washed garment in the dryer. Moist washcloths prevent the heat within dryers from becoming too dry and causing static electricity.

    • 4

Set the dryer on permanent press or another low-heat setting. Dry the garment for 10 minutes.

    • 5

Put on the garment to inspect it for static cling. If the fabric still clings to you, rub moisturizing lotion over your dry skin to balance the electrical charges and eliminate static electricity.
