How to Make Your Own Liquid Fabric Softener for an HE Washing Machine

HE, or high-efficiency washing machines, use less water and energy than traditional washing machines. HE washing machines require low-sudsing detergent because of the small amount of water they use for the wash and rinse cycles, but most liquid fabric softeners are safe for use in HE machines. Save money with a homemade, non-toxic liquid fabric softener that fluffs fabrics and reduces static cling. This formula is safe for HE washing machines because it rinses away cleanly.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 2 parts water, 1 part white vinegar and 1 part baking soda in a bottle or container. Vinegar reduces static cling and baking soda softens the fabric.

    • 2

Add four or five drops of essential oil to the fabric softener and shake the bottle or container to thoroughly blend the ingredients. You can choose any scent of oil such as fruits or flowers, or experiment with a combination of oils. This isn't necessary, but it will add a fresh scent to your laundry.

    • 3

Stir or shake the container or bottle of fabric softener before use to combine the ingredients.

    • 4

Pour 1/3 cup of fabric softener into the washing machine at the beginning of the wash cycle.
